May 1st marks the start of our Puget Sound lingcod season every year. we switch gears from chasing chrome to chasing prehistoric looking lingcod. One of our favorite white flesh fish to eat! This May was nothing short of another great lingcod season out of Seattle. We caught plenty of fish some released to live another day and some brought home for the dinner table.
Lingcod in the Seattle area faired well this month with overall consistent fishing. The type of gear we used to target these fish ranged from live bait to artificial soft plastic swimbait type stuff. The wide variety of tackle used created some interesting days where you might be only catching them on live bait and other days the fish wouldn’t touch live bait. Switching through tackle paid dividends to our success this month. If we weren’t getting bit and our offerings we were sending down to the bottom weren’t feeling “fishy” we switched it up and got some willing biters. Not Everyday was a slam dunk but we did have some great days of early limits of lingcod out of Seattle! As Captain Justin always says “Its a lot like fishing!”
Every year we try to figure out new ways to prepare our fish. The tried and true panko battered fish and chips or fish tacos are a MUST! Along with baked seasoned with some salt, pepper, garlic, and thyme cooked in butter we tried some on a cedar plank! and let me tell you, head on down to the store and buy yourself a cedar plank and thank me later! Seasoned with Cajun seasoning and a little olive oil. Place the cedar plank on the grill and cook for 15 min on medium/medium high heat and you’ve got yourself a moist piece of lingcod with a hint of smokiness to top it off! We added that to our list of favorite, as cedar planked salmon has always been a favorite, lingcod is great as well!
